What the Claude API costs per client website — about a dime

What does the AI actually cost you per client site? One Claude API call writes a whole homepage for about ten cents. Tweaking a section costs two or three. Ten client websites in a month comes to under two dollars — at Anthropic's published rates, not a promo price.

Every tool that calls itself AI-powered has a meter running somewhere. You usually can't see it until the invoice lands, and by then it's eating the margin on work you already did.

So here's the number, up front, before any of the sales pitch:

One Claude call writes a client's entire homepage — hero, services, about — for about a dime. Rewriting a section afterwards costs two or three cents.

That isn't a launch price or a trial credit. It's Anthropic's published rate multiplied by the size of the job, and the rest of this post is that multiplication done out loud.

One call writes the whole site

When you hit generate on a client's copy, the software makes a single request to Claude. It sends the business name, the trade, the city, and any reviews you pasted in. Five to ten seconds later the finished homepage copy comes back — hero, services, about, all of it, in one pass.

There's no cheaper model running quietly in the background. The words a business owner reads on their own homepage are the entire product, so the top model writes them every time.

The arithmetic, done out loud

Claude bills by the token — roughly three-quarters of a word — at one rate for what you send in and a higher one for what comes back. These are Anthropic's standard published rates:

  • Claude Opus — $5 per million tokens in, $25 per million out.

A homepage's worth of input is a couple of thousand tokens. The copy that comes back is a few thousand more. Run those through the rate above and you land at roughly a dime a site. Even if it writes to the absolute ceiling the software allows, it can't get past about eleven cents.

Rewriting one headline, or regenerating a services block you didn't like, is a much smaller job — two or three cents. You could regenerate the same section thirty times over and still not clear a dollar.

Put the dime next to the invoice

You charge a local business $500 to build their site and $50 a month to keep it running. The AI that wrote every word of it cost you a dime.

What if you didn't have to build the machine yourself?

The site builder, the client list, the word-for-word scripts, and your own Stripe — the whole system, already built and ready to run. A one-time $199.

Set that against what the alternatives charge to do less:

  • A local web developer bills $3,000 or more per site and takes two weeks.
  • A rented site builder charges $97 to $300 every month, forever — and stops working the day you stop paying.

Your ongoing cost is a dime a site and a hosting bill that starts free. That isn't a margin you have to manage. It's a rounding error.

The month you build nothing

A rented builder charges you the same whether you shipped ten sites or none. Here you pay only for the generations you actually run:

  • One client site, start to finish — about a dime, plus a few cents of tweaks.
  • Ten client sites, with a few dozen tweaks along the way — under two dollars.
  • A month where you didn't build anything — nothing at all. No minimum, no seat fee, nothing to cancel.

That last line is the one no subscription can match. A quiet month costs you nothing, which means a quiet month can't push you into taking work you don't want just to cover the tools. That's what owning them instead of renting them buys you.

What the AI is bolted onto

Worth being clear about what you're actually buying, because the AI is a feature of it, not the thing itself. It's a complete web-design agency in one install:

  • The site builder — type a business name and a trade and get a full, niche-tuned site: plumbers, roofers, salons, HVAC, and more. Each trade starts around 80% done, with real copy, real services, and matched photos.
  • A client CRM — every lead, client, payment, and support ticket in one pipeline, so a warm reply doesn't get lost in your inbox.
  • One-click launch — sitemap, canonical domain, instant indexing, and the per-niche structured data that gets a client's business into Google and into AI answers.
  • Your own Stripe — connect your account and every dollar a client pays lands in your bank. No revenue share, no per-client fee, nothing skimmed.

You pay for it once and run it yourself. It's yours after that, not rented.

Connecting Claude takes about two minutes

There's no integration to build. Get an API key from Anthropic — a normal signup, pay-as-you-go, no monthly minimum — paste it into the Settings page, and save. The generate buttons appear across the builder and it starts working.

That's the whole setup. If you want the step-by-step version, it's written up here.

Three things I'd want told to me straight

Claude writes a strong first draft, not a finished page. Read it before you send the preview. It gets the trade and the tone right; it can't know this owner stopped doing emergency call-outs last year.

A Claude Pro subscription is not the same thing. If you already pay $20 a month for Claude, that covers you using the chat app — software calling the API bills separately. It isn't a limit you can work around; it's a different product. Better to hear that now than after buying.

You don't have to use AI at all. The software ships with its own copywriter built in and no key required — plenty of sites go out that way. Connecting Claude is a speed upgrade, and you can pull the key back out whenever you like.

The short version

A dime a site. Under two dollars a month at ten clients. No subscription, no minimum, and nothing billed at all in a month you don't build anything. The expensive part of this business was never the AI. Have a look at what you'd actually own.

You just got the whole playbook — free

A dime a site. Keep the other $499.90.

The builder, the niche templates, the client CRM, and one-click launch — one install you own outright. Plug Claude in for about a dime a site, or skip it and use the writer built in. Your own Stripe, no revenue share, no monthly fee to us.
